My teaching philosophy is centered on the concept of critical thinking. I view critical thinking as the bedrock of creativity and outstanding achievement. Critical thinking is the process of evaluation and analysis of information to draw a logical and unbiased conclusion. Further, it is a level of creative thinking and clarity that helps students blot out the noise and distractions to create a product of excellence, backed up by their investigation and analysis. Irrespective of the class I teach, critical thinking, is applied. My goal is always to get students to think logically as they go through life. How do I do this, through the way I structure my syllabi, the kinds of assessments I assign for each class, and in how I discuss with students. The activities of researching, reading, writing, group discussions, capturing images and making videos are useful methods for developing students thought processes and challenging students to think outside the box. It also provides them with meanings developed from their daily encounters.
The application of critical thinking to Mass communication classes therefore, help individuals see and appreciate the field better by seeing how various platforms and technology are useful in conveying messages as well as how those messages can be created in varying formats, depending on the audience types and access. To communicate this view to my students, I practice a subjective approach to learning in which individual students are focused on and developed based on their stages and skill growth level. My course assignments and classroom activities are patterned to emphasize students unique thoughts and the diversity of my classroom to assist students in cultivating the cognitive skills needed for effective communication.
